Hand-built in the USA, the VT-9M combines D.W. Fearn's renowned Class A vacuum tube signal path with advanced Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) gain control, delivering exceptionally smooth compression while maintaining clarity, depth and stereo image integrity.
At the heart of the VT-9M are eight hand-selected 6072A dual-triode vacuum tubes, providing the harmonic richness, dimensionality and generous headroom associated with D.W. Fearn's classic tube designs. Unlike conventional tube compressors, the VT-9M uses modern PWM technology to control gain reduction, allowing precise dynamics processing without sacrificing the musical character of its all-tube audio path.
Designed specifically for stereo work, the VT-9M offers precise gain reduction tracking between its two channels to preserve the stability and balance of the stereo image. From subtle mastering compression and gentle mix bus levelling to more assertive peak control, the VT-9M is designed to process complex material while retaining detail, transient definition and low-frequency authority.
Class A All-Tube Signal Path
The VT-9M features a pure Class A triode audio path built around eight carefully selected 6072A vacuum tubes. This topology provides exceptional headroom and extremely low distortion while adding the depth, texture and harmonic character for which D.W. Fearn equipment is known.
The result is compression that can remain remarkably transparent at gentle settings while still imparting the unmistakable dimensional quality of a premium tube signal path.
Advanced PWM Compression
Gain reduction is controlled using a sophisticated Pulse Width Modulation system. This allows the VT-9M to combine the sonic character of an all-tube audio circuit with precise, modern control over compression.

Adjustable Compression Shape
The Shape control allows the character of the compression curve to be adjusted according to the source material.
Softer settings provide gentle, transparent levelling suitable for mastering and subtle bus compression, while harder settings deliver increasingly assertive dynamics control when tighter peak management is required.
This gives the VT-9M considerably more flexibility than a compressor built around a single fixed compression characteristic.
Sidechain High-Pass Filter
A built-in sidechain high-pass filter provides Off, Low and High settings.
By reducing the compressor's sensitivity to low-frequency energy, the HPF can help prevent bass-heavy material such as kick drums and bass instruments from producing excessive gain reduction or unwanted pumping.
This is particularly useful when using the VT-9M across complete mixes or stereo buses where maintaining low-frequency weight is critical.
Transformer-Balanced Inputs and Outputs
The VT-9M uses hand-selected US-made input bridging transformers together with custom-wound output transformers.
The transformer-balanced architecture provides professional studio interfacing while contributing to the unit's distinctive analog character. The input impedance of 32 kΩ makes the VT-9M suitable for bridging modern professional audio sources without unnecessarily loading the preceding equipment.

The D.W. Fearn VT-9M is a genuine boutique analog processor rather than a mass-produced studio product. Each unit is individually assembled, wired, burned in and tested by hand in the USA before leaving the D.W. Fearn workshop.
The VT-9M is backed by a limited 7-year warranty, with vacuum tubes covered for 90 days.
