We started designing the P-28 by looking at a couple of the best early tube SCD microphones. In 1954 & 1955 Neumann released the KM 54, while AKG released the C 28. We sought to recreate the low-end performance of the C 28 with the high-end qualities of the KM 54. We employed a similar sub-miniature triode tube to the one found in the KM 54. We designed our head grille construction in a style similar to that of the C 28. Under the easily removable head grille you will find a swappable capsule. A cardioid capsule is provided and other polar patterns are available. When designing the circuitry we wanted to meet the modern demand for an ultra quiet noise floor while delivering the warmth and character of these revered vintage microphones. We introduced a FET amplifier stage prior to the tube amplifier stage. This hybrid FET-tube combination delivers just what we were looking for; the quiet and reliability of a FET with the warmth and character of a tube! At the output stage we of course use a custom transformer to provide reliable balanced signal. This unique FET-tube SCD is one of the best sounding SCD microphones made in any time period. Put it up on drum overheads, on any stringed instrument, or in a Decca Tree with an orchestra to find out why engineers say this is one of the best microphones of our entire line.
The P-28 features our heavy-duty 8-pin screw on cable connector. The large diameter pins in the screw on connector give a tight and secure cable connection designed to perform for a lifetime of use.
Acoustically matched pairs available upon special request.
