The Cranborne Audio Brick Lane 500 combines analogue PWM compression with a choice of dynamics behaviours and adjustable harmonic colour. It gives you scope to change your approach between sessions: gentle levelling for one source, a more assertive response for another, or bus processing with a second module.
For a studio building a 500-series system, that flexibility makes it worth considering alongside more specialised compressors. Start with the character you need, then adjust the response to the performance. The guide below helps you decide where to begin.
Brick Lane 500 modes at a glance
| Mode | Character | Suggested starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Velvet | Gentle, Vari-Mu-inspired response | Vocals and acoustic material |
| Float | Opto-inspired levelling | Bass and vocal level control |
| Smash | Fast, FET-inspired aggression | Drums and more assertive effects |
| Tame | Precise transient control | Uneven peaks |
| Glue | Bus-compression character | Groups and stereo mixes |
| Polish | Peak limiting | Controlling final peaks |
These are starting points, not rules. Compare settings at a similar perceived loudness so that a louder result does not automatically seem better.
Six main modes, with two Polish variants
The manual distinguishes six main modes, with Polish available as White and Blue variants. White has a hard compression knee; Blue uses a softer knee. These are operating choices within one processor, rather than seven independent channels or seven separate vintage circuits.
Shape the response and the colour
Threshold, Attack and Release set the dynamics response. STRESS adds saturation that changes with the mode. In Polish, STRESS controls the clipping threshold. A selectable sidechain high-pass filter reduces the influence of low frequencies on compression detection; it is not a bass-cut EQ in the main audio path.
When comparing settings, listen for the result you actually need: steadier level, a different attack, or more audible colour. Save a note or photograph of useful settings alongside the session so you have a reference when returning to the track.
Using two Brick Lane 500 modules for stereo
OptoSync synchronizes controls between modules. A 3.5 mm TRS connection can synchronize non-adjacent units, but does not link their sidechains. Stereo dynamics linking also requires the appropriate rack connection and sidechain configuration. Follow the user guide for the complete setup.
Before ordering a pair, send KMR your rack model and a brief description of the signal chain. That gives us the information needed to help you check the arrangement before you install it.
Explore the Enigma settings
Enigma provides additional access to parameters including ratio, knee and detector behaviour. Refer to the manual before changing advanced settings.

Keep the guide to hand for installation, stereo linking and advanced configuration. Check your rack’s power capacity against the specifications above.
Before you order
Is this a standalone compressor?
No. It needs a compatible powered 500-series rack. Browse 500-series racks.
Is the price for one module or a stereo pair?
This listing is for one mono module. Order two for a stereo configuration and check the linking requirements described above.
Can KMR help me choose the right setup?
Yes. Send us your rack model, the equipment you plan to connect and the material you want to process. Let us know whether you need mono or stereo operation, and whether you already have a rack.
